COVID-19 School Re-Opening Update December 10, 2020

HEALTH DEPARTMENT UPDATE AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR SCHOOL

On Tuesday afternoon we were informed that Marin County has gone back into Tier 1 (Purple) designation for COVID-19 infections.  This development means that Lagunitas School District must continue distance learning through December and into January.  If the county returns to Tier 2 (Red) and stays there for 2 weeks, we can begin limited re-opening.

That news came as a surprise.  Predictions last week from our health department made it appear that cases of COVID-19 in Marin, were slowing down and that the County would stay out of Purple through December.

The re-opening Task Force and the Board of Trustees met Wednesday night to discuss the situation and will continue to work toward in-person instruction when conditions allow. As of today, it seems unlikely that we will be able to offer any in-person programs by January 11.  The current surge in cases locally will determine our next steps.

TESTING

Last Friday the district provided its first round of COVID-19 testing for employees.  The event was successful with 31 people participating. We have scheduled additional test dates for after winter break and will be working with the San Geronimo Valley Community Center to expand testing to community members soon.

This week we were informed that 2 of our employees had tested positive for COVID-19. (Thankfully, both are asymptomatic and are quarantining.) While this information was concerning, it did give us an opportunity to implement one of the protocols provided by the Department of Public Health. That let us practice our response in the most authentic manner possible, receive feedback from the health department and make sure we are ready for any future events.

We found that precautions we had taken were effective in limiting others’ possible exposure. As luck would have it, we had enough test kits on hand to re-test the employees who had been on campus the previous week.  All results have come back as negative except for one which we have not received. (Re-testing was not part of the protocol in this case; it just so happened that we had the ability to offer that additional service- and get rapid feedback.)

We are proud that staff members who have been working on-site have been conscientious in following social distancing, handwashing, face-covering and sanitization guidance.  Our experience over the last week offers evidence that following the rules really does work.

KEEP IT UP

Many of us are feeling exhausted as cases continue to surge. But the last 9 months have taught us a lot.  We sorely miss being in school with all children together in person.  We know that distance learning can never provide all the benefits of actually going to school.  There is no getting around the fact that this is just plain hard.  But as always, we can choose how we respond. More than ever, this is the time to stay home if you can, wear a mask if you have to go out, wash your hands a lot and be kind and patient with yourselves and your kids.  This community absolutely has the strength to emerge from this hard time stronger than ever.

Best wishes for a restful weekend.
